Bariatric Chair Advice
Bariatric chairs are designed and built to cope with higher weight limits and are normally a souped-up version of a our general chair range. Most of our chairs have a maximum weight limit of 20 stones. Some a bit more and some a bit less but once you go above 25 stones then you're looking at a Bariatric chair and we can have these made with weight limits up to 70stones.
When you're looking for a Bariatric chair we tend to advise that you look at new made to measure chairs rather than looking for a used example and there are a few reasons for this:
Bariatric chairs tend to live a harder life than other chairs because of the extra pressures put on them. Although they are built to take these pressures it means that we don't see many used bariatrics that we consider in good enough condition to re sell;
They also come in lots of different size options, weight options and can have a lot of important optional extras. So it's important that the chair you order is the right chair for you.
It's worth also noting that just because a chair has a wider than standard seat it doesn't automatically mean that it's a bariatric chair and we see a lot of our ex display chairs with seats over 24" wide with just a 20 stone maximum weight limit. If you're shopping around online always ask for proof of the maximum weight limit as if it's not as high as it needs to be the chair will fail pretty quickly.
Bigger, Better, Stronger
When deciding which Bariatric rising reclining chair is the best for you there are a lot of things to consider but first of all is always size.
Seat widths go up to 35"
Seat heights up to 20"
And seat depths up to 21"
Then there's the mechanisms to think about. These chairs are available in single and dual TiS and dual standard so it's worth doing a bit of research to see which of these mechanisms you prefer. Obviously weight limits are crucial too, these chairs start at 35 stones and go up to 70 stones maximum weight limits and we'd always advise that you consider going a bit over rather than cutting it too fine.
Another thing to consider is whether you'd like a homestyle chair which come with fixed seats and are upholstered in fabric, vinyl or leather. Or whether you'd be better off with a more medical style chair which are upholstered in easier to wipe clean stretch fabrics and can be made with removable and, therefore, replaceable seats and cushions that can extend the life of your chair.
As with all of our chairs we're more than happy to discuss the pros and cons with regard to which chair has what and what that means so please don't be afraid to call us or contact us for a bit of advice.
Finally, when you have a bariatric riser recliner don't be afraid to use the rising feature to help you to stand. Let the chair put you on your feet rather than "shuffling" to the front of the chair and then standing. When you shuffle you can put extra strain on the seat which tends to wear the fabric and seat cushioning faster. So let the chair do the work and it should work for you for longer.
